And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

Surah Ya-Sin (36:38)

Hadiths (Sunnah)

الشَّمْسُ تَطْلُعُ مِنْ مَطْلِعِهَا وَتَغْرُبُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا

« The sun rises from its rising place and sets at its setting place. »

Narrated by Abu Dharr — Sahih al-Bukhari n°3199 [Sahih]

In Surah Ya-Sin (36:38), the Quran declares:

"And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing."

The Quran describes the sun as "running" toward a determined place. Modern astronomy has confirmed that the sun is not stationary: it moves through the galaxy at about 220 km/s, carrying the entire solar system in its orbit around the center of the Milky Way.

Scientific findings

  • The sun moves at about 220 km/s through the galaxy
  • The solar system orbits the center of the Milky Way in ~230 million years
