Surah Al-Hijr (15:22)

The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is one of the most mentioned trees in the Quran. It appears in the account of the birth of Jesus, when Mary is told: "And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates" (ูˆูŽู‡ูุฒูู‘ูŠ ุฅูู„ูŽูŠู’ูƒู ุจูุฌูุฐู’ุนู ุงู„ู†ูŽู‘ุฎู’ู„ูŽุฉู ุชูุณูŽุงู‚ูุทู’ ุนูŽู„ูŽูŠู’ูƒู ุฑูุทูŽุจู‹ุง ุฌูŽู†ููŠู‹ู‘ุง) (Maryam 19:25).

The date palm in the Quran and Sunnah

The date palm is mentioned in several surahs. In Ar-Ra'd (13:4), the Quran speaks of gardens of palm trees: "And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees in clusters or otherwise, watered with one water" (ูˆูŽูููŠ ุงู„ู’ุฃูŽุฑู’ุถู ู‚ูุทูŽุนูŒ ู…

Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ recommended dates in numerous hadiths. He advised breaking the fast with dates and recommended the ajwa dates of Medina for their particular benefits.

Modern scientific discoveries

Modern science has confirmed the immense benefits of the date palm. Dates are rich in natural carbohydrates (fructose and glucose), fiber, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and vitamins. They also contain powerful antioxidants, notably flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acids.

Scientific studies have demonstrated that consuming dates in late pregnancy can facilitate childbirth. A study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology showed that women who consumed dates in late pregnancy had greater cervical dilation on admission and a reduced need for labor induction.

The date palm is also remarkable for its ability to survive in extreme desert conditions, with temperatures exceeding 50ยฐC and high soil salinity. This exceptional resilience is due to its deep root system and unique physiological adaptations.

Pollination of the date palm

The date palm is dioecious, meaning there are distinct male and female trees. Pollination occurs through wind and insects. The Quran mentions in Surah Al-Hijr (15:22): "And We have sent the fertilizing winds" (ูˆูŽุฃูŽุฑู’ุณูŽู„ู’ู†ูŽุง ุงู„ุฑูู‘ูŠูŽุงุญูŽ ู„ูŽูˆูŽุงู‚ูุญูŽ), a reference to wind pollination that was only understood scientifically much later.

Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ taught artificial pollination of the date palm, an agricultural practice known as ta'bir, which involves manually transferring pollen from male flowers to female flowers. This technique, mentioned in the hadiths, is still used today in date palm groves around the world.

Scientific findings

  • Dates are rich in natural carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants
  • Consuming dates in late pregnancy facilitates childbirth (cervical dilation, reduced induction)
  • The date palm is dioecious: wind pollination is scientifically confirmed
  • The date palm withstands extreme desert conditions (temperatures >50ยฐC, high salinity)
  • Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ taught artificial pollination (ta'bir), a practice still in use
