Music (al-ma'āzif): when sound becomes a tool of conditioning

And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.

There will surely be among my community people who will make lawful silk, wine and musical instruments (al-ma'azif).

There is a way of speaking about music that closes the dialogue before it even opens: the way that claims it "damages the brain". That is not our point, and it is not what science says. The brain is not attacked by sound the way it would be by a toxic substance. What the behavioural sciences have established, however, is more subtle and more disturbing: sound acts upon behaviour without the subject noticing, it is used as a lever, and it can occupy in the soul the place of a remembrance.

This is precisely what the sacred text targets. The Quran does not condemn the beauty of sound; it warns against lahw al-hadīth, the "idle talk" that turns one away from the path of Allah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named the instruments: al-ma'āzif. We shall follow, point by point, what the hadith enumerates, and set against each point what contemporary research has measured.

1. Contextual manipulation: a sound that decides in your place

The first level is the most discreet, and it is the most troubling. Music does not need to be listened to in order to act: it only needs to be there. In 1982, Ronald Milliman measured the walking speed of customers in a supermarket according to the tempo of the music being played. With a slow tempo, customers walked more slowly and sales rose by nearly 38%; with a fast tempo, they sped up and bought less [citation:Milliman, R. E. (1982). The sound acted as an atmosphere setting, not as a message.

Eleven years later, Areni and Kim reproduced the set-up in a wine shop: with classical music in the background, customers bought noticeably more expensive bottles than under Top 40 pop music, while the total volume purchased remained identical [citation:Areni, C. The sound did not change thirst: it changed the register in which the decision was made. This is exactly the meaning of the word ma'zif: an instrument, a tool. The tool says nothing; it makes one act.

North, Hargreaves and McKendrick pushed the demonstration further by showing that background music directs not only the amount spent but the nature of the product chosen, and that this effect is also observed in food choices and consumption intentions [citation:North, A. The common point of all these studies is the same: the subject is unaware of the influence. This is what distinguishes sonic conditioning from persuasion. You are not convinced; you are disposed.

2. Commercial conditioning: when sound becomes a purchased memory

The second level is that of the jingle. A two-second sound sequence, repeated, becomes a trigger: it brings back a brand, an emotion, a desire, without passing through reasoning. Research on musical memory explains why: memories linked to music are exceptionally durable, and they cluster around a precise period of life — the reminiscence bump, which peaks around age 14, the age at which music is most intensely invested emotionally [citation:Juslin, P. An industry that knows this does not sell a product: it sells a soundtrack. It targets the age at which emotional memory is most malleable, and anchors there sounds that, twenty years later, will trigger a purchase. The hadith speaks of instruments "that divert": the diversion here is not a metaphor. It is measured, dated, exploited. The ma'zif is no longer an entertainment: it is an instrument of capture.

3. The uniformisation of thought: what lyrics do to the mind

The third level concerns content. Here research is more nuanced, and it must be said honestly: the effect of lyrics on behaviour is moderate for attitudes and conduct, but strong for emotions and immediate thoughts. In other words, a song does not mechanically turn a listener into a delinquent; but it durably shapes his inner climate, his representations and his mental reflexes.

The reference meta-analysis on this point is that of Anderson, Carnagey and Eubanks, who synthesised several decades of work: exposure to violent lyrics increases aggressive thoughts and hostility, regardless of musical style — that is, it is neither rap, nor metal, nor rock that is at issue, but the verbal content itself [citation:Anderson, C. It is not the sound that uniformises, it is what is put into it.

And this is where the verse takes on its full meaning. Luqmān 31:6 speaks of "idle talk" (lahw al-hadīth) purchased "to lead astray from the path of Allah without knowledge". The text does not target harmony: it targets discourse. It targets the moment when sound becomes a vehicle for content, and when that content works upon the mind unbeknownst to the one who hears it.

4. The grip on the psyche: the reward circuit

The fourth level is that of pleasure itself. Music is not neutral for the brain: it activates the dopaminergic reward circuit, and this activation is not a mere accompaniment — it causally mediates the pleasure felt. Ferreri and colleagues showed that by pharmacologically blocking dopamine, musical pleasure is reduced: music therefore truly uses the same pathways as other rewards [citation:Ferreri, L., Mas-Herrero, E., Zatorre, R. This is not an evil in itself: reward is a mechanism willed by the Creator. The problem begins when this circuit becomes the site of an addiction, and above all when it becomes the site of rumination. Garrido and Schubert showed that repeated listening to sad music can sustain and prolong a depressive state instead of relieving it, by feeding a rumination from which the subject can no longer escape [citation:Garrido, S., & Schubert, E. The sound did not damage the brain: it installed a loop. And a loop, in the soul, takes up space.

5. Substitution: when sound takes the place of dhikr

We arrive at the point that the sacred text foregrounds, and that science can only observe from the outside. The danger is not that music is "toxic": it is that it is sufficient. A sound that fills the heart, that regulates mood, that provides an immediate and repeatable reward, occupies exactly the function that dhikr is meant to fulfil: presence, appeasement, the orientation of the heart.

The Quran describes this substitution in striking terms: "And when you see those who engage in idle talk about Our verses, turn away from them until they engage in another topic" (Al-An'ām 6:70). It is not a matter of forbidding a conversation: it is a matter of recognising that certain contents, by their mere presence, distance one from remembrance. The hadith of Bukhārī (no. 5590) goes in the same direction: it announces people who "make lawful" the instruments, that is, who cease to see the problem — not because the sound wounded them, but because it occupied them.

This is why our conclusion is not "music destroys the brain". It is more demanding: sound is an instrument, and an instrument always serves someone. The question is not only what I listen to, but who uses it, and to what end. The believer who keeps this question alive keeps his heart free.

Detractors' arguments

This convergence, although documented, calls for several reservations that should be known in order to pre-empt criticism:

  • Laboratory effects, not destinies. The studies cited measure short-term behavioural variations (a tempo, a choice of bottle, a mood after listening). They do not demonstrate that a person becomes durably manipulated or uniformised: effect sizes remain moderate, and real-life context is far more complex than a shop or a pair of headphones.
  • Causality is difficult to isolate. Correlation is not causation: listeners of violent lyrics may already be more hostile before listening. Meta-analyses control for part of these biases, but they do not eliminate them entirely.
  • The hadith is read extensively. The hadith of Bukhārī no. 5590 is classified sahīh, but its interpretation divides scholars: some see in it the prohibition of instruments, others a warning against a specific use (entertainment that diverts). Our reading is that of a warning about use, not a condemnation of sound in itself.
  • For the believer. These objections diminish nothing: they merely recall that science describes mechanisms, while the sacred text speaks of the heart. The believer recognises in them that sound can serve or enslave — and that it is for him to choose who uses it.

Scientific findings

  • 1982: Milliman measures the effect of musical tempo on walking speed and purchases in a supermarket (+38% in sales with a slow tempo).
  • 1993: Areni and Kim show that classical background music increases the average price of bottles purchased, without changing the volume bought.
  • 1997-1999: North, Hargreaves and McKendrick establish that background music directs the nature of the product chosen, unbeknownst to the consumer.
  • 2003: Anderson, Carnagey and Eubanks show that violent lyrics increase aggressive thoughts and hostility, regardless of musical style.
  • 2015: Garrido and Schubert show that sad music can sustain depressive rumination instead of relieving it.
  • 2019: Ferreri et al. demonstrate that dopamine causally mediates musical pleasure (pharmacological blockade).
