DNA and the creation of man "in the best constitution"

BIO-11 Surah At-Tin Verse 4 2026-09-06 12:41:42
Quranic verses

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ

We have certainly created man in the best of stature.

Surah At-Tin (95:4)

In Surah At-Tin (95:4), the Quran declares:

"We have certainly created man in the best of stature (ahsan taqwim)."

The Arabic expression ahsan taqwim (أحسن تقويم) designates the most perfect constitution, the best form or the most beautiful stature. The Quran states that the human being was created according to an optimal design, both in physical form and in inner constitution.

Modern biology has revealed that the human body is the product of genetic information of astonishing complexity and precision. The Human Genome Project, completed in 2003, sequenced the roughly 3 billion base pairs that make up human DNA, organized into about 20,000 to 25,000 protein-coding genes.

One of the most remarkable discoveries of genome sequencing is that most of the DNA — long called "junk DNA" — is in fact functional. The ENCODE project (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements), launched in 2003 and published in 2012, revealed that about 80% of the human genome performs a biochemical function, notably the regulation of gene expression. DNA is not a simple sequence of genes: it is an extremely sophisticated information system where each element plays a role in the development, functioning and adaptation of the organism.

The precision of genetic information is such that a single replication error among the 3 billion base pairs can cause a genetic disease. The DNA repair mechanisms, which constantly correct copying errors, testify to the robustness and sophistication of this information system.

The convergence between the Quranic verse and modern biology is striking: the Quran, revealed in the 7th century, states that man was created in the best constitution. Modern science reveals that the human body is the product of a genetic information system of remarkable complexity, precision and optimization.

Level of evidence: The complexity and functionality of the human genome are firmly established by scientific consensus (Human Genome Project, ENCODE project). The convergence with the Quranic verse is suggestive and falls within a scientific interpretation of the text, as the notion of "best constitution" is a theological affirmation that cannot be scientifically demonstrated in the strict sense.
